For over two decades, the Development Education Network-Liberia (DEN-L) has stood at the forefront of a critical mission: the pursuit of grassroots empowerment, economic justice, and democratic development for our nation. Born from a passion to bridge the profound capacity gaps left by years of conflict, we have worked tirelessly in communities across Liberia, focusing on practical, field-based learning and advocacy.
Yet, we have consistently heard a resounding call—from community workers, civil society actors, and the youth of this nation—for deeper, more structured, and accessible education in the development arena. The challenges are clear: the collapse of community structures, limited affordable higher education opportunities, and the desperate need for professional skills that directly address Liberia’s post-conflict reality. We have seen too many bright, ambitious high school graduates in Gbarnga and beyond forced to choose between high-risk livelihoods and the dream of an education.
It is in direct response to this call that we, the Board and Management of DEN-L, with the invaluable collaboration of our partners and consultants from the University of Liberia led by Prof. Francis Maweah, are immensely proud to establish the Miriam T. O’Bryant-Development Studies Center (MTOB-DSC).
This Center is more than just a new academic program; it is a commitment. A commitment to providing an affordable and accessible perfect alternative for development workers and the impoverished population. Our vision is a Liberia at peace with itself, and we believe that peace is built on the foundation of knowledge, critical thinking, and practical skills.
The MTOB-DSC is built on the core values that have always guided DEN-L: Transparency, Collaboration, Accountability, Equity, and Justice. We are committed to providing quality and useful educational experiences—through Associate Degrees, Diplomas, and Certificates—that are responsive to the real needs of our participants. Our curriculum is designed not just to teach theory, but to foster academic and career success through a real-life development learning approach.
Whether your passion lies in Community Development, Gender and Youth Development, Conflict Resolution, Organizational Development, Monitoring & Evaluation, or even using Community Theatre as a tool for social change, the MTOB-DSC offers a path. We are preparing a new generation of leaders to undertake development research, analyze policies, and manage interventions that will truly transform our society.
On behalf of the entire DEN-L family, I invite you to join us in this transformative journey. Whether you are a prospective student, a development partner, or a community leader, your engagement is crucial. Together, we can build the critical capacity needed to overcome personal, institutional, and societal challenges and foster sustainable growth at all levels.
Let us work together to empower Liberia’s greatest resource: its people.
Sincerely,
Peter S. Dolo
